fragrance of breaking

The Fragrance of Brokenness

Posted on April 28, 2026April 29, 2026 by BJ

When what is broken before God releases what is beautiful to Him

In a world that constantly tells us to build ourselves, promote ourselves, and protect our image, the message of the Gospel often feels completely opposite.

We are taught to celebrate strength, success, and self-achievement. We polish our image, guard our reputation, and strive to rise higher. Whether in corporate life, ministry, or social spaces, the pressure is the same: “Don’t go down. Stay impressive.”

But the Spirit of God asks a very different question:

“What have you brought into My presence—and are you willing to break it?”

A Moment in Bethany

In John 12, just days before the crucifixion, Jesus is in Bethany having dinner with His disciples. Lazarus is there—the one raised from the dead. Martha is serving.

And then Mary walks in.

She carries a jar—expensive, sealed, and deeply valuable. Inside is costly perfume. Without hesitation, she breaks it and pours it at the feet of Jesus.

That moment changed everything.

Jesus said:

“Leave her alone… she has kept this for the day of my burial.”
“Wherever the gospel is preached… what she has done will be told in memory of her.”

Mary’s act was not just emotional—it was eternal.

Brokenness Releases Fragrance

The perfume had value while sealed—but its fragrance was hidden.

Only when it was broken did the fragrance fill the room.

This is the heart of the message:

  • Your gifts have value
  • Your calling has potential
  • Your life carries something precious

But nothing spreads until something breaks

We often bring to God:

  • our achievements
  • our reputation
  • our identity
  • our carefully built image

We hold them tightly like a sealed jar.

But God is not asking you to display it.

He is asking you to surrender it.

The Life of Mary: A Pattern of Devotion

Mary appears three times in the New Testament—and every time, she is at the feet of Jesus:

  1. Receiving – sitting at His feet, listening
  2. Weeping – broken in grief at Lazarus’ death
  3. Surrendering – pouring out what was most valuable

She wasn’t known for preaching.
She wasn’t known for miracles.

She was known for devotion.

And that devotion led her to a place where she could break what others would protect.

The Hidden Work of God

Brokenness often feels like loss.

Loneliness. Silence. Being overlooked. Being hidden.

But consider a seed.

If placed in a showcase, it looks beautiful—but remains useless.
If buried in the soil, it disappears—but begins to grow.

The breaking of the outer shell is what releases life.

In the same way:

  • Your hidden seasons are not wasted
  • Your struggles are not meaningless
  • Your breaking is not the end

It is the beginning of fragrance

What Determines Your Value?

The world measures value by:

  • success
  • possessions
  • appearance
  • influence

But God measures differently.

Your value is not in what you display externally—
but in what is released internally.

A sealed jar may look impressive.
But only a broken one fills the room with fragrance.

The Danger of Holding Back

Many believers carry incredible potential:

  • calling
  • anointing
  • purpose

But there is one problem:

They are not willing to be broken.

It is not a lack of gifting.
It is a resistance to surrender.

We want to serve God—but on our terms.
We want impact—but without cost.

Yet Scripture reminds us:

“A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17)

Misunderstood by Others

When Mary broke the jar, Judas criticized her.

He called it waste.

People may do the same to you:

  • “Why are you so spiritual?”
  • “Why are you sacrificing so much?”
  • “Isn’t this too much?”

What the world calls waste,
God calls worship.

The Power of Surrender

Mary’s act was prophetic.

Even before others understood, she recognized something deeper.

Jesus connected her act to His burial.

Her brokenness aligned her with God’s purpose.

And because of that, her story continues to be told.

The Question for Today

What is in your jar?

  • Your plans?
  • Your ambitions?
  • Your success?
  • Your identity?

Are you willing to break it at the feet of Jesus?

Like Jesus prayed in Gethsemane:

“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

That is the ultimate picture of brokenness—not defeat, but surrender.

Final Thought

Your brokenness is not your weakness.

It is your fragrance.

When surrendered to God, it becomes something that:

  • touches lives
  • fills rooms
  • honors Christ

So today, don’t just come into His presence with something to show.

Come with something you are willing to break.
